If you own a 2007 to 2014 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL or Escalade with Autoride, you already know how this goes. The system was excellent when the vehicle was new. Twelve to nineteen years later, the dampers are past their service life, the compressor runs longer than it used to, and the dash has started telling you about it.

What makes this generation different from a newer truck is that there is no realistic path back to factory. The parts are still available, but they cost more than the vehicle is worth to a lot of owners, and GM has superseded the part numbers so many times that even getting a straight quote is work.

This guide covers what Autoride actually is, what your SUV does when it fails, what GM charges to put it back, and how the new OBD/SS Legacy lets you leave the system behind and run whatever suspension you want.

Autoride is not MagneRide, and the difference matters

This is the single most common point of confusion on this platform, and it sends people to the wrong parts and the wrong modules.

Autoride is Regular Production Option (RPO) code Z55. MagneRide is RPO Z95. They are two different damper technologies. Autoride does not use magnetorheological fluid.

Here is what is actually on a Z55 vehicle.

Front: bi-state electronic damping

The front units are electronically controlled hydraulic dampers with electrical solenoid actuators inside the shock body. Rather than changing the properties of the fluid, the system changes the path the fluid takes. The electronic suspension control (ESC) module sends variable millisecond signals to the solenoids, which open and close internal valves and change how freely the hydraulic fluid flows.

That switches the valving between modes, firmer for flat cornering and braking, softer for smoothing out a rough road, based on body-to-wheel displacement, steering angle and vehicle speed inputs.

Rear: electronic damping plus an air sleeve

The rear units are a hybrid. The hydraulic core uses the same computer-controlled electronic valving as the front. Wrapped around the shock body is a rubber air bladder.

When the ride height sensors detect cargo or a trailer, the vehicle runs an on-board compressor and pumps air into those bladders to lift the rear frame back to its target position. That is the automatic level control (ALC) system, and it is the half of Autoride most owners actually notice when it stops working.

💡 A terminology note worth knowing: on 2007 to 2014 vehicles GM calls the controlling module the electronic suspension control module, or ESC. The name changed to suspension control module, or SCM, starting in 2015. If you are reading a service procedure or a forum thread and the terms seem inconsistent, that is why.

The Cadillac exception

GM began fitting RPO Z95 MagneRide to Cadillac SUVs in 2009. So a 2009 to 2014 Escalade may carry Z95 where a Tahoe of the same model year carries Z55. Both are covered by the OBD/SS Legacy, because the Legacy emulates the full electronic suspension control module rather than any one damper type.

Your Regular Production Option label, in the glove box, settles it. Look for Z55 or Z95.

How the system fails, and what your SUV does about it

Both halves of Autoride are wear items, and by now most of them are worn. The failure pattern we see across GM adaptive suspension holds here, with an extra failure point the newer platforms do not have.

The dampers fail the way any damper fails. Seals give up, fluid escapes, and an oily film shows on the shock body. On the rear units the air sleeve is a second failure point, because rubber that has been flexing for well over a decade eventually cracks and leaks.

The compressor is the third. It is a positive displacement piston pump on a 12 volt motor, drawing filtered air through an intake line on the underbody rail. A leaking air sleeve makes it run more, and running more is what kills it. GM limits its run time to 255 seconds specifically to keep it from cooking itself.

There is also a self-test you may have noticed without knowing what it was. On every ignition cycle the module runs the compressor for four seconds and watches the position sensor voltages to confirm the system is working and holding pressure. A system with a leak fails that test every single time you start the vehicle.

What sets the dash message

The electronic suspension control module watches both the damper circuits and the position sensor circuits, and it reports what it finds to the driver information center.

  • DTCs C0615, C0620, C0625 and C0630 cover the four suspension position sensor circuits. A sensor circuit reading below 0.35 volt or above 4.75 volts for more than one second under normal driving will set one, confirmed across three consecutive ignition cycles.
  • DTCs C0575, C0580, C0585 and C0590 cover the four shock absorber actuator circuits, left front through right rear, with subtypes for short to battery, short to ground and open circuit.

Any of them will put "SERVICE SUSPENSION SYSTEM" in the driver information center, and it keeps coming back for as long as the fault is current.

⚠️ The part most people find out the hard way: per GM's own service information for this platform, an actuator circuit short to battery displays "SERVICE SUSPENSION SYSTEM" and "SPEED LIMITED" and disables all four dampers. On short to ground and open circuit faults, any combination of two damper actuators failing at the same time also displays "SPEED LIMITED." Unplugging four dampers to fit conventional shocks is four simultaneous open circuits. The speed limiter is not a risk on this platform, it is the documented outcome.

Resistors and connector plugs do not solve this. They change what one circuit measures, they do not make the module report a healthy system, and the fault stays in place.

What GM charges to put Autoride back

We do not sell shocks or air springs, so we have no reason to inflate these numbers. Below are current published prices from a franchised dealer's online parts store, showing both the manufacturer suggested price and what that store actually charges. These are part prices only. No labor, no tax, no shipping, no alignment.

GM's listing for the leveling shock reads "with auto level" and does not separate front from rear. On these SUVs the air-sleeved leveling shocks are the rear pair, so that line is your rear corners.

Two leveling shocks and one compressor is $2,501.27 at MSRP, or about $1,454 at that dealer's online price. That is the rear of the vehicle only. It does not include either front corner, it does not include a single position sensor, and it does not include labor.

Add one failed position sensor and you are past $1,650 discounted. Add all four corners and the sensors and you are restoring a vehicle of this age to a condition it will not hold for long.

We are not going to publish a front-corner figure for Z55 until we can tie one to a specific GM part number with a published price and confirmed fitment. GM superseded the front damper part numbers repeatedly across this generation, and the cross-references available online do not agree with each other. Introducing the OBD/SS Legacy

The OBD/SS Legacy is a full electronic suspension control module emulator for 2007 to 2014 GM SUVs with Autoride. It is the newest module in the ShockSims line, and it brings this generation the same complete-system approach the OBD/SS Apex brought to 2015 to 2020 SUVs.

What it does on the bus

The Legacy connects at the OBD-II port and takes switched power from the retained accessory power circuit. From there it emulates the electronic suspension control module on the vehicle bus, including valid ride height data.

Because the vehicle sees a complete, healthy suspension module reporting normal signals, the "SERVICE SUSPENSION SYSTEM" fault does not set, and neither does the "SPEED LIMITED" state that follows two or more disabled dampers.

That is the whole mechanism. It is not a resistor, it is not a connector plug, and it does not silence a symptom while leaving the fault stored.

What that lets you remove

Emulating the entire module rather than masking missing shock faults is what makes a full conversion possible on this platform.

  • All four Autoride dampers come off, replaced with conventional shocks or coilovers of your choosing
  • The complete air leveling system comes off: rear air shocks, compressor, dryer and air lines
  • The four suspension position sensors come off. The Legacy supplies the ride height signal itself, so Ride Height Simulators are not required
  • There is no air line loop to route and no compressor to keep powered so it can pass the ignition self-check
  • Nothing runs under the vehicle. The electronics stay in the cabin

That last point is an engineering choice with a real service life behind it. Wiring run under a truck of this age sees heat cycling, road salt, moisture and debris. Cabin electronics do not.

Before you buy: what you give up

We would rather tell you this here than have you find out in your driveway.

The Legacy is a full air delete. When the automatic level control system comes off the vehicle, the vehicle no longer levels its own rear ride height. Load the cargo area or hitch a trailer and the rear will settle to whatever the springs and shocks you selected allow. Nothing raises it back up.

Your rear coil springs still carry the vehicle, so static ride height on an unloaded SUV is unaffected. What you lose is the automatic leveling under load.

We do not offer a partial option on this platform. On 2015 to 2020 SUVs an owner who tows can delete only the front dampers with the OBD/SS Classic and leave the rear air system working. On 2007 to 2014 vehicles the electronic suspension control module carries the damper data and the air data together, so there is no equivalent front-only path. The Legacy is all four corners at once.

If automatic rear leveling matters for how you use the vehicle, that is a real reason not to convert. Decide before you order, and call us if you want to talk it through.

Fitment

The OBD/SS Legacy is for SUVs only. It requires the air leveling system, which is why it does not apply to Silverado or Sierra pickups.

An OBD-II splitter can be bundled if you want to keep the port available for another device.

Two things you do not need. Ride Height Simulators are not required, because the Legacy is a full emulator that handles the height sensor signals itself, and the connector dust caps we offer on newer platforms do not fit the older connectors on these vehicles, so they are not part of this kit.

Installation overview

The suspension work is the job, and the module is the easy part.

  1. Remove the four Autoride dampers and install your chosen conventional shocks or coilovers.
  2. Remove the air leveling components you are deleting: the compressor, the dryer, and the air lines.
  3. Remove the four suspension position sensors if you want them off, and leave the OEM connectors disconnected.
  4. Plug the Legacy into the OBD-II port under the driver's side dash and connect the red lead to the retained accessory power pin in the driver footwell.
  5. Start the vehicle and confirm no suspension messages are active.

The module side is hand tools and interior trim only. No cutting, no splicing, no dealer scan tool, and nothing routed under the vehicle. The detailed installation guide ships with the module.

Common questions

Is Autoride the same thing as MagneRide?

No. Autoride is RPO Z55 and uses solenoid-actuated electronic valving. MagneRide is RPO Z95 and uses magnetorheological fluid. They are different technologies with different part numbers. GM did fit Z95 to Cadillac SUVs from 2009, so a late Escalade in this range may carry MagneRide where a Tahoe of the same year carries Autoride.

How do I know whether my SUV has it?

Check the Regular Production Option label in the glove box for Z55 or Z95. If the label is missing or unreadable, run your VIN through Find Your Module.

Will my SUV actually limit its speed if I just unplug the shocks?

Yes. GM's service information for this platform states that when two or more damper actuator circuits fail simultaneously, the driver information center displays "SPEED LIMITED" alongside "SERVICE SUSPENSION SYSTEM." Four disconnected dampers is four simultaneous open circuits.

Do I need Ride Height Simulators as well?

No. The Legacy emulates the full electronic suspension control module, including the ride height signal, so a lifted or lowered vehicle needs no additional parts.

Can I convert only the front corners?

No. On this platform the module carries the damper data and the air data together, so the Legacy is a full-system conversion. All four corners are done at once.

Will the rear end sag once the air shocks are gone?

Not at rest. The rear coil springs carry the vehicle, and the air sleeves only add lift under load. What you lose is automatic leveling when the vehicle is loaded or towing.

What about a 2015 or newer SUV?
