Frequently Asked Questions

OBD/SS

Should I get the OBD/SS or the Multi-Piece kit?

Majority of our customers go with our OBD/SS Module. It is one plug and does not require a Trim Procedure or Scan Tool. The OBD/SS Module is easier to install and lives inside the vehicle. The OBD/SS even works with lifted or lowered vehicles when Ride Height Simulators are installed.

What is The ShockSims® OBD/SS?

The OBD/SS Module is our most popular product. It provides a plug-n-play solution for replacing stock magnetic (FE4 - F55 - Z95) suspension on the latest generation of GM vehicles. The module lives on the OBD2 port communicating ONLY with the Suspension Control Module (SCM)

The Module then manages the behavior of your vehicle's SCM so no speed limiter or service suspension messages will be present.

Where do I plug in the OBD/SS Module?

The module plugs into the OBD2 port
You can follow our install video by clicking this link here YouTube Install Video
NOTE: OBD/SS CARBON (2021+ SUV Magneride) bypass will source their 12V power elsewhere, Example SUVs passenger side fuse panel.

Will this product drain my battery?

No it will not.
The OBD/SS turns off 5 seconds after it stops seeing traffic on the CANbus.
NOTE: OBD/SS CARBON (2021+ SUV Magneride) uses 12V accessory/ignition power - the module will turn on/off with the vehicle.

Does it have to stay plugged in?

Yes. The OBD/SS must stay plugged in to bypass your magneride.

What if I want two things on my OBD2 port?

We offer a OBD2 Port Pass-thru Cable that will allow you to run another device.

Does the OBD/SS require a Ride Height Trim procedure?

The OBD/SS does not require a trim procedure! No Scan tool needed.
OBD/SS uses the OE ride height sensors, leave those plugged in and your stock ride height calibration will be read by the OBD/SS. If you are removing the stock ride height sensors because of a lift or lowering kit, we offer ride height simulators.
Please note: Multi-Piece Kits may require a Ride Height Trim Procedure

If I only replace my front struts will my rear struts continue to work?

Yes they will. All previously working components that are still on the vehicle will continue to work.
OBD/SS is intuitive enough to pick up on exactly what is missing, and bypass it.

What if I have Auto Level in the rear?

This applies to 2015 and up Suburban LTZ - Tahoe LTZ - Yukon XL Denali - Yukon Denali with RPO Z95 AND RPO Z85.

If you need/want to keep the Auto Level Functionality, you would use our OBD/SS Module and replace the Rear Shocks with non magnetic AIR Shocks.

With our OBD/SS Installed and Air Shocks in the rear, the Auto level will function as normal.

If your OEM rear magnetic AIR shocks are in good shape and functional, leave them installed on the Truck/SUV. Install our OBD/SS Module and replace the front with your choice of new conventional struts. The rear auto level will function as normal.

If you do NOT need or want to keep the auto level functionality, you would use our OBD/SS Module and replace all four magneride shocks with conventional shocks.

You would then need to bypass the Auto Level air feature by following along to our video linked here -> ALC Bypass Video

Do you plan on towing with your (Tahoe/Suburban) or (Yukon/YukonXL)?

If yes, then retaining the air-ride suspension in the rear would be the best option. (See question above)
If no, you can replace the rears with non magnetic non air shocks and follow the video in question above to bypass the Auto Level air feature.
Check out our 2015 Tahoe LTZ with factory 22" wheels has Monroe 139104 struts up front and Monroe 911506 shocks in the rear.

What are the Ride Height Simulators For?

If your vehicle is lifted or lowered so that the original ride height sensors are no longer attached then you would need to purchase our Ride Height Simulators along with the OBD/SS Module.

Not familiar with the terminology, I need a quick rundown.

'Strut' and 'Shock' will be used interchangeably. Front Shocks are coil-over strut assemblies. Rear shocks are shocks.

Miscellaneous

Why can't I just buy the non-magnetic strut and put it in my Z95 strut assembly?

Unfortunately, NONE of the hardware (upper strut mount, spring seat, cir clip washer, etc) on the magnetic struts can be swapped over to a non-magnetic (Bilstein 5100, Rancho RST, Any AC Delco) strut due to differences in shaft diameters. We have tried them all. A little more detail in this post here.
